Dusty roads and waste tip in Chiwempala

Chiwempala, an informal community on the outskirts of Chingola, is home to several thousand families. Waste tips from open cast mines dominate the skyline. Dusty, bumpy, red earth roads lead to sprawling homes made of mud bricks.

Over the past three years, Lesa Kutemwa has provided support for a good number of children and extended families, including:

Musanga is a rural area approximately 17km from Chingola. It is a collection of traditional hamlets, and home to around 200 families. Straddling the main Kitwe to Chingola road, the area is served by a network of red dust roads and tracks.

As well as supporting individual children and families, MAC is funding an agriculture project which includes the development of a fish farm, and a part time teacher. When David visited in October 2009 twenty nine children were enrolled in the school which was temporarily housed in Chimfinsa Church. See current project

Lesa Kutemwa has recently been asked to support the development of a school in an informal community on the edge of Kitwe. The area is a maze of red dust streets and alleyways serving a jumble of huts and shacks. The only local school is a long way away, and many families cannot afford the costs associated with sending their children there; consequently many children have no access to formal education.
