MAC was set up as a Company Limited by Guarantee in 2008 and achieved charitable
status in 2009. It is managed by volunteers, ensuring that all the money donated
is channelled into supporting the children who need it.
MAC’s aim is to help children by providing aid for their welfare and education
to promote sustainable economic growth and regeneration, enabling future
generations to meet their own needs. David Ward and Kate Gray are the directors
of MAC. The charity is governed by
five trustees
and run by a Management
Committee.

Members of MAC first became aware of the plight of vulnerable and orphaned
children in Zambia in 2006, when Joyce Phiri of Lesa Kutemwa visited her
daughter in Manchester. Lesa Kutemwa is a child care organisation based in the
Copper Belt of Northern Zambia. The community has been decimated by the loss of
almost an entire generation of parents to HIV/Aids, leaving thousands of
children with no consistent means of support.
Lesa Kutemwa currently helps to provide the following:
- Food and clothing aid
- Assistance with school fees, uniforms and books
- Assistance with health care
- Support for accommodation needs
- Links into bereavement and HIV/Aids counselling services
Formally registered as a child
care organisation in 2008, Lesa Kutemwa is overseen by a number of trustees and
run by a Management Committee of four. The organisation provides care and
support for children in the towns of Chingola and Kitwe, and also for those in a
rural collection of hamlets knows as Musanga, between the two towns.
